THE BASE Outdoor Rentals is a family-run business operated by Kohei and Kozue, who work together to make every customer’s experience a positive one. It was founded in 2019, born from their shared love of the outdoors and a desire to help people enjoy safe and memorable adventures with quality gear. Kohei manages overall operations and marketing, while Kozue handles accounting and customer service.

Originally from Tokyo, Japan, Kohei and Kozue graduated from the same university in 2006. Shortly after graduation, they came to Canada together and spent the winter season working at a ski and snowboard rental shop in Whistler, BC.

That experience planted the seed for their future business. They realized how meaningful it was to meet customers twice—once at pickup and again at return—to hear about their adventures and feedback on the gear. They found joy in helping people feel confident and well-prepared to explore the outdoors by providing high-quality gear in great condition. This hands-on experience became a foundational moment that inspired them to one day start their own rental business.

In 2007, they returned to Tokyo, where Kohei worked for Burton Snowboards for seven years — a time when he was surrounded by some of the best gear in the world and absolutely loved every minute of it. During this time, he also gained valuable experience in sales and marketing, learning many of the skills that now contribute to their business.

Kozue gained valuable experience working in finance at Parks Canada, where she had the opportunity to work alongside a dedicated team committed to protecting Canada’s natural heritage. The time she spent there was deeply meaningful, and the experiences she gained continue to play an important role in shaping their current business.

Today, they live in Whitehorse, Yukon, where they’ve been based since 2015, together with their son Kyte. They truly look forward to meeting and talking with travellers from across Canada and around the world.
