How to choose layering

"I booked my Winter Clothing Package. Now should I bring anything else?"

If you ask this question, the short answer is YES. I will explain it in more detail below.

Choosing the right gear and layering is the key to keeping you warm. But we need to tell you that the main purpose of our winter clothing is for northern lights viewing that doesn't require you to move around so it is different from activities like backcountry skiing or snowboarding. This is one of the biggest reasons we rent down jackets and pants, instead of the ones using other insulated materials as down is the most efficient insulator and they will keep you warm in very cold temperatures.

That being said, wearing a down jacket or pants itself is not enough to keep you warm. You will need layering pieces. Generally speaking, 3-4 layers under a winter jacket and pants are recommended but we recommend 3 layers if you wear a reliable outer like our down jacket. In this case, 1st layer, thin long shirts, 2nd layer, fleece and down jacket as 3rd layer. As for pants, 1st layer, long johns or leggings and down pants as 2nd layer would be warm enough. If you bring a pair of ski socks (or extra socks) to put on, that would be great especially when the temperature goes down to minus 20 degrees.

Last but not least, choosing the right size is more important than anything else. Some people consider choosing one size bigger for extra layering, but we don't recommend this because there will be a space between you and the clothing, allowing the cold air around you and causing heat loss. With our winter clothing, you can choose your regular size and still wear 3-4 layers underneath.
